180 Devices Relocation – London to London

Project specification

Hackney London Borough Council is the local government authority for the London Borough of Hackney in Greater London, United Kingdom. It is one of 32 borough councils London and was created by the London Government Act 1963 whereby it replaced three local authorities: Hackney Metropolitan Borough Council, Shoreditch Metropolitan Borough Council and Stoke Newington Metropolitan Borough Council.

For this project, Technimove were required to provide an end to end solution around the physical migration of 180 devices from their internal facility in London to a purpose built colocation facility also based in London. One of Hackney’s main focuses was to minimise downtime and risk and required Technimove to provide a complete service including an audit of the existing environment, pre cable of the new facility, and a dedicated physical migration from de-commissioning through to re-commissioning and cable managing at the destination site.

Technimove’s solution

Technimove assigned a dedicated PRINCE2 Project Manager to the requirement who worked and co-ordinated with Hackney to audit the environment ahead of the migration to ensure the correct resources were appointed for the migration, this also enabled Technimove to produce rack plans and assist Hackney with the development of patching schedules which would assist with the pre cabling. The environment was pre cabled to minimise down time on the day of the move. New copper & fibre cables were also provided.

Technimove’s highly experienced team of engineers arrived on site in London well in advance of the start time and started by decommissioning the devices, before de-racking and individually wrapping all equipment in anti static bubble wrap. The equipment was then placed into Technimove’s purpose built, foam-lined Server Flight Cases and transported in our GPS tracked vehicles to the final site in Greenwich, London where it was unpacked, re racked and recommissioned in accordance with rack plans and patching schedules. Technimove also advised Hackney to split the business-critical equipment across multiple vehicles which took differing routes, leaving at different times to minimise risk.

Conclusion

Forward planning, communication and effective time management are important factors for every migration, whether it is just one device or an entire Data Centre footprint.

The migration project was a complete success, delivered on time and without any issues.
